Rainbow trout have a small head, long body and two dorsal fins, the small one made of adipose tissue.

Rainbow trout have a colourful body: bluish or greenish sides and silvery belly, and a purple-red strip, which can be reddish sometimes, across their sides.

The colour is typical of the species, but may vary or even disappear in some specimens.

Commonly called "steelhead", their colour may vary, which is strongly related to hatching; adults are generally darker and with more pigmentation.

Their body is sprinkled with small dark spots, which also appear in the tail and fins.

Rainbow trout can be found in almost every river and lake of the province of Neuquén, and is a very highly prized game fish due to its fighting spirit and its size - it can weight 10 kg in lakes.

It feeds mainly on insects, mollusc, crustaceans and fish.
